Good news and bad news

The good news
Well I was happy to find that all my calculations and knitting matched my schematic perfectly. Yeay! That was the tricky part. After wrapping my brain around determining the slower decrease rate on the decrease side of the diagonal to actually create an increase, I admit I felt a wee bit clever. Heh, nothing like knitting to keep you humble however.

:)

The intended result. (Do please excuse the crap photography, my photographer (Mr. Pieknits) is out of town.)

The bad news
Like I said, the knitting matches the schematic - too bad the schematic was wrong. Doh. It's so obvious to me now of course, and would've been if I had given more than 2 seconds thought to the basic beginning. So what does it actually look like?

:(

Hershey's Kiss head!
Although I should stop looking at this photo because I'm starting to kinda like it...
Not the result I wanted however. Below is the basic shape of the hat flat. I had taken the measurement of the full width, then the width after all decreases and drew the diagonal lines. I was imagining the ends to fold in and meet in the middle. The reality in 3-d is you fold it in half down the center- and you can see the sloping point that results.

What it needs to be is like this. Again, looking at it now this is embarrassingly obvious.

I hope this yarn rips well.

I like it! I think it is a great looking hat--different. And my son just popped over here and said he would like one in Red.

btw: he is 5 and he says is a Pixie Hat

is there any way you could post a pattern for the pointy hat? it would look adorable on my niece!

It's beautiful, I'd like to knit such hat, I repeat a request for the pattern. ^^

I love both the hats. The first one is beautiful, the second one is cute! You did a great job on your creation even if it didn't turn out exactly like you thought. =)

I agree with the others. It's not what you had in mind, but it really is cute! The "corrected" photo is adorable, too, and it's going to look great with the shaping you intended.

The hat is very cute...in both forms. So you did end up with something good, even though it's not what you intended.

I was going to comment as well that you seem to have created a very cute child's hat!
The yarn is beautiful and I can't wait to see the finished pattern(s)!

Don't be mad if I tell you I like the Hershey's Kiss Head! It's so fun!
I just discovered you did something that I have never been able to do ... you are still keeping the sticker on your camera! Whenever I have a new toy, I just peel everything out before using it. ;)

I like the hat. It's cute! And looks cute on you!

LOL - aww, thanks for the much-needed laugh. I actually kinda like the hat. It would def make an awesome kid's hat. I agree with the other posters - you should hold onto that pattern and size it down some for a child. Really.

hah I like it with the point :) (and it does rip well--the first hat I made sans pattern was in teseo and, well, it ended up being a bit of a large yarmulke. oops.

personally, i think you should keep this one as it is, and maybe try out the design with new yarn. it's adorable!

Oh, it's super cute as a pointy hat! Interesting construction - I hope you post a pattern when you've got it all figured out.

OMG I WOULD TOTALLY WEAR THE POINTY HAT!! :) can you post both patterns? hahahaha. :)

I agree with Alice--it's too cute to frog.

that is actually kind of cute the more I look at it... :)

But it is so cute the way it is!

I like the pointy one too! It makes me think of a little garden gnome! I'm sure version 2 will be cute too, though.

I think it's cute. It does look like a pixie hat. :)

I hope when you get it fixed, you will consider sharing the pattern! Its super duper cute :) Intended and not intended (although I don't want to be Hershey kiss head...)

OMG, I love the hat as is. That being said, it's OK to love the current hat and still make one to follow your vision. ;-)

It is a cute hat as is, but perhaps for a tinier person. I really like the diagonal ribbing. Such a lovely green, too.

Awwww, I think it's adorable with the point on top!

I agree with the previous posters--you've created an adorable kids' hat! Please size the pattern down and publish it!

Both are great!! I think you'll have to write up the pattern for both variations now!

And the pixie hat matches the chocolate-peanut butter cookies you posted recently too. ;)
