Meme randomness
I've been triple tagged for this one (Suze, Juliana, and pen & purl) so here it goes.
Obligatory Rules
Each person tagged gives seven random facts about themselves. Those tagged need to write on their blogs seven facts, as well as the rules of the game. You need to tag seven others and list their names on your blog. You have to leave those you plan on tagging a note in their comments so they know that they have been tagged and need to read your blog.
The list:
1. I'm double jointed in both thumbs. Mostly this is just annoying when trying to do certain things, such as playing musical instruments.
2. I've always had a lot of music in my life and play several instruments- piano, clarinet, guitar, some bass clarinet, drumline in school (cymbal) and dabbled in saxophone. I miss having a piano and now that we have a house have been obsessively checking Craigslist for one.
3. I really really want to take belly dancing and/or fencing classes. I know, seemingly odd combination but have wanted too for a long time. I've looked up places in the area and should really just do it.
4. My family really wasn't that crafty that I can remember. My mom sewed a little and did crochet for a short bit but I never learned. My grandmother seemed to have a traumatic experience with an argyle sock way back when and that was that. I did a lot of crafts in Camp Fire growing up though, although not knitting.
5. Until about 4 years ago I'd lived my entire life within about a one mile radius (that's actually 4 different places too) but really just by chance - had not intended it. I was very happy to Get Out but still feel like I'm "new here".
6. I love language and linguistics, could go on and on about structure (er, I mean ones other than English). Mr. PieKnits speaks 6 languages which apparently I think is a lot cooler than he does. I studied Japanese in school although not as much as I'd have liked. Now I'm working on learning Telugu (Mr. P's native Indian language) and really like it. I can read and write the entire script but learning material is a bit rare unfortunately so it's slow going. Ironically it's spoken by about 75 million people, just not much outside of his home state.
7. In college my roommates and I cut our own hair (poor students) and I have since made a vow to Never Ever cut anyone's hair again. The boy tried to get me to trim a little piece once and I adamantly refused, you do not want to let me near scissors and hair. (Although cutting off my dreadlocks myself had been fun, yep you read right)
Ok, I don't think there's many left who haven't been tagged for this. So let's do it in reverse- if you feel like considering yourself tagged leave me a comment so I can read yours. I think they're bizarrely interesting.
And because pictureless posts are no fun - bobbins two and three (which I'm still working on)

These are some little 1 oz samplers I had, thinnest I've ever spun for sure.

Comments
Oh, your spinning really looks good! Wow, 6 languages! I'm really impressed. I took a German class in college and really loved it. I recently bought a home study kit and want to pick it back up again someday.

I would highly recommend taking bellydancing and/or fencing classes.. though not at the same time because both are seriously exhausting. I absolutely loved to fence and competed in some small events locally.. one day I'd love to return to it.
You had dreads? I'm struggling with the thoughts of how long I'm planning on letting mine go because I know that I'll eventually have to take scissors to my hair to remove them. I'm not sure I'm ready to make that sort of commitment to my hair.. lol.

Oh man, you just reminded me of the time I cut my friend's bangs in 8th grade...I cut them wet and when they dried and shrank...oops. I think she didn't talk to me for a couple days after that!

oh, see...I disagree. Take bellydance and fencing simultaneously. I think it's a perfect mix. This comes from a bellydance teacher that has also wanted to fence but took archery instead.

It was fun reading this and learning more about you. Your spinning is really pretty!

i really want dreadlocks, but i'm afraid they'd look terrible on me. also the whole still-looking-for-a-job thing.
i did the meme already, if you want to take a look. it includes links to ridiculous pictures.

I recommend Isis's school for belly dancing - While I do not dance myself I know two who do, and they love Isis. (One woman in fact has danced with Isis's troupe at Scarborough Faire, as well as trying to make a living off of dancing in restaurants and such.) The classes are out in Bedford though, and I don't know if that counts as local enough for you.

I've wanted to take belly dancing too! I've heard it's a great workout.

Bellydancing is one of the best classes I ever got dragged into (how girl's nights out have become sweating while perky people make us do crunches I'll never understand, but I was assimilated into the gym just for the classes) but I would try to get the basics of either that or the fencing before starting to crosstrain. Trust me. I'm in the process of being cleared for fighting (Ren Faire group with full contact combat) at our big event - 1200 people fighting at once - and trying to learn both is kicking my butt. Fun, but I'm finding places aching that I wasn't aware HAD nerve endings... let alone being conected to anything I thought I was moving! If I had half a brain I would have staggered the process, rather than just being staggered.
The language issue is always fun. My husband speaks 5 fluently, and can make himself understood in about 4 others. Me? I can read latin and french (and pull off decent Cockney and a bit of thieves cant... long story!) but speaking is not my forte. His answer? We're to learn Arabic together this summer since neither of us know it. Who knew there was homework involved in marriage?

I used to set up a little barber shop in the boy's wing of one of the dorms in college. They ususally just wanted me to mow their mops with the buzzers. Not hard stuff. Jealous of the dreads. Wish I worked somewhere where that would fly.
Feel free to read mine.
